Upcoming Mozilla Marketplace lacks Linux support; open-source fix in the works

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 6:09 pm | Comments (0)

ImageBack in March, Mozilla outlined plans to further integrate web apps into Firefox to complement its upcoming Marketplace. And while the web store will launch with Windows and OS X compatibility, the browser has — at least for the time being — snubbed Linux. Given that Firefox is the default browser for most Linux distros, the community behind that OS is none too pleased. Though Mozilla execs have expressed their desire to add Linux support eventually, community contributors are already working on a patch to add compatibility for GNOME desktop. How’s that for taking matters into your own hands?

HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE delayed at customs due to ITC exclusion order

HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE delayed at customs due to ITC exclusion order

We’ve just received a statement from HTC indicating that two of its flagship devices — the One X for AT&T and the EVO 4G LTE for Sprint — have been delayed at customs due to an ITC exclusion order that was handed down last December at Apple’s behest. That order was set to go into effect on April 19th, and it looks like HTC’s two new stateside superphones are the first to feel Apple’s the government’s wrath. Here’s HTC’s take on the matter:

The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.

We’ve reached out to HTC for clarification on the delay and to find out if this will affect the launch of the EVO 4G LTE, which is expected to hit the shelves this Friday, May 18th. Stay tuned for updates.

Update: While HTC doesn’t have any additional information to share at this time, we’ve also contacted AT&T and Sprint for comment. Let’s just hope that the issue can be resolved in a timely manner.

Sony applies for wireless power patent, wants to daisy-chain your energy

Sony wireless power patent

As much as we’re familiar with wireless power, we know developing a truly contact-free form of charging has a whole raft of extra challenges, such as getting into the sweet spot for power delivery and the potential traffic jam caused by throwing another device into the mix. Sony thinks it has these problems licked through a newly-published patent application. Its method uses location-finding to steer users until they’re close enough for the wireless power source to reliably do its job. In some cases, it can use one mobile device to relay power to another, keeping everything fed even if the main power hub is tied up. Multiple power sources next to each other can go so far as to decide which of them should be the one to send power. The patent isn’t a certain sign that your VAIO or Xperia is about to cut the cord altogether — Sony first submitted this vision of the future in 2009. Even so, it gives us hope that our gadgets will one day start charging themselves instead of making us hunt down a wire or charging plate.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 8:09 am | Comments (0)
windows home server 2011 whs

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

Google holds back on open-sourcing Honeycomb, heralds massive shift for Android

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 5:09 am | Comments (0)
Android Honeycomb

Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won’t affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. “To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs,” says Andy Rubin, the head of Google’s Android group. “We didn’t want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut.”

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb — it doesn’t want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 4:09 am | Comments (0)

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Chrome live tab syncing

Google first teased live tab syncing in Chrome 19 beta, and it’s now available for all of us who tread the safer path of Stable releases. If you weren’t living on the bleeding edge for long enough to try the syncing early, you’ll be glad to know that it lets you see and quickly sync all the tabs that are open on any device signed into your Google account. That includes your phone or tablet, if you’ve got Android 4.0 and the Chrome for Android beta loaded up. Like with the beta, though, you’ll have to cool your jets if you were hoping to get live syncing right away: Chrome 19 Stable is pushing automatically over the next few days, but tab syncing will take weeks to be ready for everybody.

Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 1:09 am | Comments (0)
tarzanball

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

Uncategorized | Wednesday May 16 2012 12:09 am | Comments (0)
personalactivitymonitor

Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s free and bare-bones — all it does is track what applications you’re using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn’t integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn’t require constant Web app use, knowing how long you’ve used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space — alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive — but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

How Yahoo Killed Flickr and Lost the Internet [Exclusive]

Web startups are made out of two things: people and code. The people make the code, and the code makes the people rich. Code is like a poem; it has to follow certain structural requirements, and yet out of that structure can come art. But code is art that does something. It is the assembly of something brand new from nothing but an idea. More »

Balance is a challenging mouse-based physics game

Uncategorized | Tuesday May 15 2012 10:09 pm | Comments (0)
balance

Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is “above” the windows. It doesn’t push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid – and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It’s a very tricky game – one I wouldn’t recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.

O2 UK rolls out 42Mbps DC-HSPA+ 3G, gives that new iPad fast data in Old Blighty

New iPad 3/4 box shot

The UK might be champing at the bit for 4G auctions to finish and give the country a taste of sweet, sweet LTE, but O2 UK is at least offering a panacea with a launch of dual-carrier HSPA+ 3G, or DC-HSPA+ in less wordy form. The British carrier has started deploying a full 42Mbps to “major” cities on the isle, most likely including London as one of them. Vodafone would argue that going dual-carrier is old hat, having started a year earlier, but it’s also peaking at 28.8Mbps — and frequent data advocate Three doesn’t start its own proper 42Mbps deployment until the summer. As such, if you’re a Brit looking for the speediest path to the Internet for a new iPad or one of the few other devices that supports DC-HSPA+ at full bore, O2 looks to be your best bet for now.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

Uncategorized | Tuesday May 15 2012 8:09 pm | Comments (0)
elephantquest

When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you’ve “specialized” your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you’d like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there’s a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

Facebook snaps up mobile photo sharing firm Lightbox, decides Instagram isn’t enough

Facebook

We get the impression that Facebook is on a big mobile photo sharing kick: just weeks after it bought Instagram for a cool billion, the social network has just hired the staff behind Lightbox. The two-man team of Nilesh Patel and Thai Tran is bringing its mostly Android- and HTML5-focused knowledge over to Facebook, where it’s hoping to reach many, many more people. You’ll have to wait awhile to see what the Lightbox team brings to Facebook’s ever more mobile platform, but you’ll also want to hurry if you want to keep anything hosted on Lightbox: the service shuts down on June 15th. As a consolation for the shutdown, the startup’s code is being posted to GitHub so that the fruits of its efforts live on in open-sourced form.

The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that “The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead.”

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you’ll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You’re also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts — which will ensure you’re notified when a new episode is coming up.

HTC One XL now available in Australia from Mobicity

Android Central

Aussie carrier Telstra, may have delayed its own launch of the HTC One XL, but that doesn't mean our Australian friends are completely out of luck. Enter third-party retailer Mobicity, which is now stocking the One XL regardless.

The One XL of course is the non AT&T, Snapdragon S4 powered variant of HTC's flagship device. Available in black only, the One XL will work on all Australian 3G/HSPA networks, as well as the 1800MHz LTE network offered by Telstra. (And if anyone's thinking of importing, the One XL also supports European LTE networks on 2600MHz bands.)

Pricing is set at AUS$850, and the phone is available right now.

Add playback hotkeys to Amazon Cloud Player with a Chrome extension

Uncategorized | Tuesday May 15 2012 11:09 am | Comments (0)
Sure, Amazon’s Cloud Player works — as long as you’re in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering — but it’s fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we’d like to see added — but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don’t have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you’ll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you’re in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn’t have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well — just make sure you don’t set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome’s built-in keyboard shortcuts.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

battlepaint

In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you’re not even a cube — just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That’s important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The “baddies” are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn’t sound very emotionally deep, it’s because it isn’t. But it’s fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and “eat it up” to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don’t be offended — I don’t think it’s personal.

Twitter now sending email summaries, will keep weekly tabs on the Biebs

Twitter hasn’t wasted any time in making good on its Summify acquisition. Not even half a year after the ink has dried, you can now opt to get a curated summary of the “most relevant Tweets” and linked stories sent to your email inbox. The layout borrows more than a few cues from the new Discover tab and will let you respond from the email message itself, although we can imagine friends being slightly irked at reviving a conversation that was so very three days ago. Even so, once the option has rolled out to everyone within the space of a few weeks, it’ll be an easier way to keep up on one Mr. Bieber’s Twitter adventures without others’ pesky life events and politics getting in the way.

Intel launches new Ivy Bridge Xeons, targets microservers

Intel is pushing out that delicious Ivy Bridge update to server chips and, interestingly, it’s not focusing purely on the high end to start. In total, 28 new Xeon CPUs were introduced today, including the E5-4600 and 2400 families targeted at four and two socket systems, respectively. Those tweaked mainstream processors aren’t the interesting part, though. We’re more intigued by the updated E3 series, the low-end offerings that are aimed small businesses and light web-hosting duty. In particular the new E3-1220L v2 slashes power consumption to an impressive 17w by going with just two cores and only 3MB of cache. While that 3W advantage over its predecessor may not sound like much, it can make a huge difference in the microserver market and in high-density environments where cooling a room full of servers can become problematic. Even in its stripped down form the extremely low-power processor still supports Turbo Boost, Trusted Execution Technology and PCI-Express 3.0. Considering that last-gen’s Atom-based server chip pulled down 15W, we’d consider the 1220L v2 an impressive feat of engineering. Now we’ve just gotta hope that Intel can carry through on that promised 6W Centerton chip. Check out the PR after the break.

How Effective is the iPad as a Business Tool?

Right from the start the iPad was marketed as one of the best unique devices to be launched on the market. It’s screen size and ability to render amazing images as well as it’s great video playback lives up to this claim. However, there is more to the iPad than just this because the device offers business-savvy users some very interesting apps they can really benefit from.

Although Apple is pretty independent, it does however, have in-built support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and 2007. Microsoft’s Business Email service cannot be ignored and as such Apple would not let their users get left behind should they choose to buy an iPad.

This enhanced software feature allows iPad users to manage specific calendar details as well as search global address lists and inbox messages that are stored in their Microsoft profile.

Apple is known for it’s high level of security and this is just as important on the iPad. Data exchanged over the Internet or over-the-air can be encrypted. Corporate communication over-the-air is also very well protected using a certificate-based authentication process via VPN and Exchange. If users lose their iPads or they are stolen, people are able to delete any vulnerable data that’s stored on the device by way of a remote command app.

There are loads of specialized apps which include business metrics tracker, proposal reviewer and many more that have be specifically developed with business users in mind. Apple hosts the iPhone Developer Enterprise Program which is much the same as the enterprise edition of the BlackBerry RIM. The real difference between the two is that iPad users can create their own apps and they can share these with colleagues as well as employees when deemed necessary.

Companies are able to set up on their own profiles on their iPads and this includes their details like VPN, email, password as well as wireless networks which they can then share with their colleague through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the Internet.

For business users, the iWork app allows them to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. These applications have been specifically designed to be accessed by the iPad’s multi-touch screen system. They can create and present keynote slides throught the touchscreen device and manage Numbers and Pages by simply tapping the element on it.

Users can share these documents in different ways including via a VGA adapter that connects the iPad to a projector which allows the device to display a much larger image, this is particularly useful when a presentation needs to be given to a roomful of people. One good thing about the iPad is that users can import Microsoft documents onto their device. Users can share their presentations, spreadsheets and text document on a much wider scale if they upload to iWork.com as this allows a much larger audience to view the files when they need to.

New iPad Smart Covers

At the release of the iPad 2, Apple also brought out its Smart Cover product, which quickly became a favorite. Although the new iPad 3 is a little thicker through the middle than the iPad 2 (due to a bigger battery), it is still compatible with the previous Smart Covers that are currently for sale. This is excellent news as the Smart Cover not only protects the iPad screen from scratches and scrapes but is also functional and practical, and [...]

MakerBot uncovers the miracle of 3D printed 'bot making (video)

There are few things out there that can send you into a shame spiral of career despair quite as quickly as watching a group of people with arguably one of the funnest jobs in the world. People like the MakerBot 3D design team, who were tasked with assembling an army of cuddly robots a “petting zoo” for this weekend’s Maker Faire in the San Francisco Bay Area. Now, granted, we’re sure they all work hard, but we can’t help but feel a little jealous at the opportunity to design kid-friendly ‘bots using the company’s Replicator 3D printer. Check out a video of the team in action after the break.

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

Uncategorized | Tuesday May 15 2012 5:09 am | Comments (0)
windows 8 explorer ribbon

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you’re viewing — such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder’s view style.

It’s clear from all the placeholder images and repeated elements that this is very much a work in progress, but featuring the Ribbon more prominently in Windows 8 would certainly be a logical progression for Microsoft. It’s slowly become more ubiquitous, moving beyond Office and into Wordpad, Paint, and several of the Windows Live Essentials applications.

There’s more to the screenshots than the Ribbon UI, however. Our friend Long Zheng has noted two interesting elements in the images: Web sharing and sync (image after the break). That would likely mean users will be able to quickly upload files to SkyDrive and synchronize using Live Mesh right from Explorer in Windows 8. That’s not a total surprise considering many of the earliest leaked images of Windows 8 showed Windows Live integration on the desktop.

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Tizen gets play time on Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE, shows off new features

Slowly but surely, Tizen’s picking up momentum. In just the last two weeks we’ve witnessed version 1.0 of the OS get released, a prototype device made by Samsung, an official pledge of support by Sprint and even a full-out developer’s conference. One thing we haven’t yet seen, however, is the Linux-based firmware running on an existing Android phone. At the aforementioned convention’s keynote, Jong-Deok Cohoi — EVP of the Tizen Technical Steering Group — showed off a few more features, such as photo gallery, videos and live calls… on what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE. This is great news, since it looks like Tizen supports at least some of Sammy’s handsets — in dev guise, at the very least. For now, curious open-source fans should head below to see the full video.

Let’s say you’re embroiled in an international tale of espionage and intrigue, and you’ve got hard drives filled with incriminating evidence and top secret information. You could dispose of that potentially dangerous data by manually wiping each disk with multiple passes of a disk erasing app or, you could pop them in the Data Killer and be done with it in seconds. Platform of Japan demonstrated the information obliterating devices at the Information Security Expo. A large powerful magnet realigns the bits on the surface of the drive’s platters eliminating all trace of the data that existed before, without physically damaging the hardware. With just the push of a button a Data Killer can wipe practically any magnetic media, including tapes or an aging floppy disk. The data disposals even come in different sizes, allowing you to kill just a single 3.5-inch disk or up to 14 at a time. The larger models can even accept an intact laptop. Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Right now, if you look at the sky at sunrise or sunset when the sun’s light is dim, you might be able to see Sunspot AR1476, which is now wending its way across the face of Sol, with your naked eye. The sunspot measures 160,000 km across, or about a dozen times Earth’s diameter. Eyeballing the sun might hurt your eyes, of course, so it’s better to avoid looking directly at it.

Two weeks after arriving into JFK on the back of a Boeing 747, the Enterprise has been hoisted from the back of the jet and onto a wheeled transporter. From there, the prototype spacecraft will be taken down the Hudson river on a barge, where it’ll end up exhibited on the flight desk of the USS Intrepid (CV-11). The museum will open on July 19th, while the plane that carried it has one more historic flight to carry out — taking the Endeavour to the California Science Center before both are retired.

Boomshine is a soothing-yet-frustrating time waster

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 8:09 pm | Comments (0)
boomshine

One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying.

There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Tesla coil gun exists, may shoot lightning

Tesla coil gun exists, may shoot lightning

Inspired by the graphic novel “Five Fists of Science” — and perhaps encouraged by the plucky MIT student who made his own Tesla coil hat and survived — a DIYer named Rob designed a Tesla coil gun, which he says is fully functional. Rob used a Nerf gun cast in aluminum for the housing and created a high voltage switch with a 3D powder printer. The gun is powered by an 18V ion drill battery and a flyback transformer housed inside a PVC plumbing end cap. Though Rob has yet to fire the gun, photos show what he says are sparks from the setup, and a demo clip is on the way. While video proof is always nice, so is preserving your life. We wish Rob the best with both.

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 11:09 am | Comments (0)
PlayStation One games on the Android Market

If you’re lucky enough to own an Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson’s new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad — you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don’t have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely — and more importantly, will it be possible to ‘spoof’ the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today’s release of first-party PlayStation games.

LG superphone

The folks at BriefMobile got hold of some info about an upcoming LG LS970 for Sprint, and it has some impressive specs — namely the quad-core Krait S4 and 2GB of RAM. All the info they have certainly looks legit, and it's very likely we'll see this one sometime in Q4. But while everyone is in awe of those impressive innards (including most of us here at AC) we have to remember that these are exactly the components we expect to see at the end of this year. We're ready for the next generation of hardware, but unfortunately we'll have to wait a while longer for it.

Apple has just released the Apple TV software update taking it to version 5.0.1; it is actually version 5.1.1 inline with other iOS devices but Apple still files the version numbers differently for whatever reason.

We’ve seen plenty of shots of the Nokia 808 PureView in action, but they’ve all been hampered by boring old terrestrial bounds. Thankfully, a team attached the handset to a giant balloon for a little more perspective. The photo is at the end of the six and half minute video after the break, but thankfully there are a lot of lovely shots of Iceland accompanying atmospheric music to keep you busy in the meantime.

[Thanks, Chad]

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 7:09 am | Comments (0)
mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 6:09 am | Comments (0)
helloexpense

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You’re using it on the go, so you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you’re trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 5:09 am | Comments (0)
windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

Matsunichi’s MarquisPad MP977 tablet tempts us with $249, dual-core Android 4.0

Uncategorized | Monday May 14 2012 3:09 am | Comments (0)

Image

You might remember Le Pan’s tablets from CES this year, of which only one was truly ready at the time. The company is now ready to hit the US in earnest, but you’ll have to forget the company name along with the earlier designs: it’s now Matsunichi, and it’s planning to kick off its US-ready makeover through the MarquisPad MP977. The tablet shares the 9.7-inch, 1024 x 768 display of the Le Pan II, but it’s now running a slightly speedier dual-core, 1.2GHz TI chip (likely the same OMAP 4430 as in the Droid Xyboard), ships with Android 4.0 out of the gate and comes in a sleeker — not to mention browner — shell. Storage is being cut in half over the Le Pan II to just 4GB between the internal memory and a bundled microSD card, though, and the battery is good for a very modest five hours. Nonetheless, the $249 sticker and a May release will put the MP977 in the running with the slower but more capacious Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

Matsunichi also teased us with a roadmap for a pair of future tablets in the process. The 10.1-inch MP1010 will keep the resolution, but it’ll run on a quicker 1.5GHz TI processor and carry a total of 10GB of space when it appears sometime between June and August. If those 0.4 inches of extra glass are just too much to bear, an MP979 will bring all the extra storage and speed of the MP1010 to a 9.7-inch screen sometime between August and September.

Windows 8 getting a built-in PDF reader, Metro-style

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 11:23 pm | Comments (0)
For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn’t Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they’re working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it’s clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We’ve posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google’s cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX — a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

AVG launches LiveKive cloud sync and backup tool

avg livekive dropbox

A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you’re not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

NVIDIA confirms no 'Project Grey' until 2013, Tegra 3 LTE later this yearWhile earnings calls are rarely the veritable dial-in party, sometimes they do toss up a juicy gambit or disappointing revelation. While NVIDIA was dishing out projections for Q1 2013, it pretty much quashed any hopes of seeing an in-house LTE Tegra chip in 2012. While we were assured that Tegra 3 LTE phones would come this year — based on those partnerships announced back in February — it was also stated that the thoroughbred Tegra LTE chip wouldn’t be a reality until 2013. So, this pretty much ties in with what we had heard, but this time, from the horse’s mouth.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 9:06 pm | Comments (0)
Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

Recently, Computerworld reported that Adobe had informed folks using an older version of its famed Creative Suite — CS5 and CS5.5, to be exact — they’d have to shell out the CS6 upgrade fee in order to get a fix for some recently discovered bugs. Apparently, Adobe took notice to its customers’ dissatisfaction and updated its initial blog post with a changed tune, stating, “We are in the process of resolving these vulnerabilities in Adobe Photoshop CS5.x, and will update this Security Bulletin once the patch is available.” The same is true for both Illustrator and Flash. This kerfuffle started after Adobe handed out warnings for eight “critical” vulnerabilities found in certain versions of the three applications — some of which are said to be exploitable and could potentially be used to “take control of the affected system.” We’ll see how it all plays out over the upcoming days, but in the meantime hit the links below to see if you need to take any action.

James Trew and Joe Pollicino contributed to this post.

Adobe changes tune on CS5 updates, won’t seek paid CS6 upgrade to patch vulnerabilities originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 12 May 2012 23:59:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Bing begins roll out of HTML5-enhanced search interface

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 8:35 pm | Comments (0)
Bing transitions

Bing’s new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions — the fade in and out — and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States – English and pray that you’re part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 8:17 pm | Comments (0)
Firefox slow-addons list

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox’s slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla’s new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, ‘slow performance warnings’ will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn’t enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform ‘on-demand performance testing,’ so that they can test their add-on before it’s deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox’s start-up time by 10% — which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might’ve been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Rogers preparing for launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung Galaxy S III

Remember a few days ago when an ad for Rogers popped up, seemingly to proclaim their version of the Samsung Galaxy S III would come with the Exynos processor and LTE? Well, we still don't have a definitive answer on whether or not the ad was accurate but we do know now that we're at least one step closer to finding out.

A news bulletin has been sent out to Rogers employee's letting them all know the obvious and confirmed — the Samsung Galaxy S III is coming to Rogers very soon. Needless to say, we'll keep digging for clarification which shouldn't take too much longer now that Rogers is relaying information internally.

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

If you’d been by the shore of the Sumida River in central Tokyo this past weekend, you would have noticed that it was glowing a distinct shade of blue. That’s because Panasonic decided to kick off the first-ever Tokyo Hotaru (fireflies) festival by sending 100,000 EVERLED light bulbs down the river, both to mimic fireflies as well as to pay homage to a Japanese tradition of floating candles on the water. Before you cringe too much at the thought of the environmental impact, rest assured that Panasonic minimized the footprint of its aquatic LED parade. All the bulbs ran on solar power (presumably, charged during the day) that kept Evolta batteries fed inside, and the entire lot was scooped up in a large net afterwards. We love the exhibition as a large-scale demo of sustainable lighting — you may just want to avoid fishing along the Sumida’s shoreline for awhile in case you catch a straggler.

Update: We’ve found a video of this spectacular event — check it out right after the break.

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Audi e-bike Wörthersee lets you pop wheelies eco-style, plays nice with your smartphone

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 11:09 am | Comments (0)

Image

We’re no stranger to e-bikes here, but most of the examples we’ve seen so far have very much been meant for A-to-B rides. Audi’s aiming to fix that with its e-bike Wörthersee prototype. The carbon fiber transport not only has a strong 2.3kW motor — the most powerful ever in a bike, so says Audi — but can use that power for tricks. You can flick the Wörthersee into a wheelie mode and either shift your weight around or leave it fully automatic, depending on the fierceness of your stunt skills. Not that it’ll be a timid ride if you prefer to keep both wheels on the ground, as a motor-assisted pedaling mode will take you up to 50MPH, and you can still ride at 31MPH if you’re not keen on using your legs. That’s faster than the already speedy Grace One City we tried, folks. The vorsprung durch technik also comes through a smartphone tie-in, although in a much more stunt-savvy way than the app- and tuning-focused Ford E-Bike Concept: it tracks video and trick runs, both for its own game system and for bragging rights on Facebook.

With a very light 3.5-pound carbon fiber frame and a quick 2.5-hour charge-up time, the e-bike Wörthersee sounds like a wild ride that will charge quickly enough for a spin on your lunch break, but we wouldn’t rush to put down a deposit. Audi is calling the prototype a “show bike,” which is a sign than the design as-is won’t show up at the local sports store. We’ll let you know if the Wörthersee or a more pragmatic descendant makes the leap to a dealer.

Sony Xperia GX and SX reportedly coming to Japan in July and August

Uncategorized | Sunday May 13 2012 10:09 am | Comments (0)

Android Central

Sony announced the Xperia GX and Xperia SX just a couple of days ago with an estimated "summer" launch window for both devices. But today leaked documentation obtained by XperiaBlog offers a little more granular detail. According to info obtained by the site, the Xperia GX will arrive in July, with the Xperia SX following shortly after in August. (This roughly matches a leaked Sony roadmap which appeared back in January.)

The documents also reveal plans for NTT Docomo branding atop the Xperia GX's 4.6-inch screen, as well as size and weight info. Apparently the device will weigh 127 grams and measure 131mm x 69mm x 10.2mm. As it features the same arched back design as the Xperia Arc, the thinnest point of the GX measures 8.6mm, same as the Galaxy S III. Apparently it'll also ship with a 1700mAh battery, which should hopefully be enough to power its 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 720p Sony Reality Display. As we reported earlier in the week, other specs include a 13MP rear camera with 1080p video recording, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

And in Xperia SX news, renders included in this latest leak reveal that the phone will apparently ship in pink and orange, in addition to the already-revealed black and white flavors.

Unfortunately there's no news on when (or if) either device will see an international release. Sony tells us that these phones are "designed specifically for the Japanese market," adding "we have not made any announcements with regards to possible availability in other markets."

If you like poring through Japanese technical documents, you'll find more info from today's leak over at the source link.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 lands at UK's Carphone Warehouse

Brits left unaffected by last month’s US launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 can now get in on the Ice Cream Sandwich action: the silver version of the tablet recently landed at Carphone Warehouse in the UK, and the white model is reportedly coming on May 18th. The retailer is offering the 8GB, WiFi-only flavor for £199. Though the Tab 2 7.0 didn’t top the charts when it crossed our reviewer’s desk, its solid performance and decent battery life make it one of the best value-priced Android 4.0 slates out there. Click through to the source link to reserve this 7-incher, but if it’s the silver model you’re after, it looks like you’ll have to pick up the phone to make the purchase (at least for now).
