You might not recall, but when the BlackBerry PlayBook came out last year it was close—oh, so close—to being a respectable iPad competitor. But the omission of native email, calendars and contacts was a fatal flaw, both for reviewers and the buying public. More »

Enhance your photos with Simply HDR for iPhone and iPad

Simply HDR has the potential of turning your ordinary photos into extraordinary ones. HDR photography has turned into an art form itself, and Simply HDR does a great job of creating these types of images with very little work from the user.

Most HDR apps require you to take at least two photos, each exposed differently, to be combined into a single image. Simply HDR aims to make the process, well, simpler, by performing the edits on just one photo. This is great for those times when you’re browsing through your Camera Roll and realize that a photo you took the other day might look nice with some HDR processing.

After opening the photo you’d like to edit, you can choose from five different styles: High Dynamic Range, Black and White HDR, Contrasted HDR, Shadows and Lights, and Contrasted Light — each of which has 9-15 different “filters” to choose from. Then you can adjust shadow and highlight corrections, vignette settings, grain strength, and add a tint.

Many people like the over-processed look that HDR photos can achieve, so if that’s what you’re looking for, Simply HDR does it well. Personally, I prefer subtle, natural-looking HDR processing. Lucky for me, Simply HDR has some options that fit my taste as well. The photo above is one such example.

If you pick this one up, we would love it if you shared your images with us in the iMore Photography Forum!

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

Uncategorized | Thursday February 23 2012 2:44 am | Comments (0)
torus

As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You’re usually looking at a “wall” of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn’t really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus’ 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It’s also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It’s an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

Uncategorized | Thursday February 23 2012 1:44 am | Comments (0)
howsecureismypassword

We’ve all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that’s hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won’t hurt either.

That’s a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they’re important.

It’s basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from “weak” to “strong”, it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That’s a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered “rabbit”, it came back with “your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly”. “rabbit5″ would take two hours, “$rabbit5″ would take 38 days, and “$rabbitZ5″ would take 237 years. It’s quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won’t get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer — only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that’s really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There’s no guarantee this app hasn’t been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon

Uncategorized | Wednesday February 22 2012 5:44 pm | Comments (0)

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it’s actually the same cost as buying it outright. There’s no rent-to-own option, though — so you wouldn’t have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you’re looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

‘Select’ PS Vita apps hit the US PlayStation Store: Netflix, LiveTweet and Flickr (Update: video hands-on)

Did you just brave the lines of a midnight launch party and snag yourself a PS Vita in the US? Good news ye early adopters, Sony’s PlayStation.Blog.US has just announced that select free apps will be available as part of today’s PlayStation Store update. Currently, you’ll find Netflix, LiveTweet and Flickr, but there’s still nary of trace of Facebook or Foursquare among the bunch (nor any official word on release dates for that matter). We gave each app a download and quick spin prior to them being officially listed without much in the way of hiccups — however, Netflix does take its sweet time to start-up. Disappointingly, Vita’s 20MB cap on 3G data is totally in effect on Netflix, as switching to our cellular connection denied us any access to the service. We’re giving the apps some extended use to bring you our initial impressions shortly, but for now, you’ll find more info at the source link below.

Update: We’ve added a brief video hands-on just past the break to let you grab a taste of each app before downloading them for yourself.

Gunze’s new touchscreen tech knows who’s touching it

Gunze

Touchscreens can’t differentiate between you, your friend or your cat. Truth is, they’re actually amazingly simple pieces of technology without much in the way of brains. A new type of display shown off at the International Nanotechnology Exhibition & Conference in Tokyo last week does imbue the panels with at least enough smarts to tell people apart. Gunze Ltd pairs a special capacitive screen with electrodes, which a user touches with one hand while interacting with a game or app. The immediate use would be for table-top arcade games, which would differentiate between up to four different players based on what particular circuit they complete when touching the screen. We wouldn’t be shocked if a version of the tech started showing up in multi-player video poker machines and bar games relatively soon.

iPhone 5 rumored to be keeping to fall release schedule for 2012

Apple is rumored to be sticking to a September or October 2012 release cycle for the iPhone 5 — or whatever they end up calling the next-generation iPhone — just as they did with the iPhone 4S in 2011. Japanese news site Macotakara reports:

According to Asian reliable source, the next iPhone will be released in September or October, and this cycle seems to be kept for years.

Previous to the iPhone 4S, Apple historically held to a summer release cycle, with the original iPhone hitting on June 29th, 2007. Subsequent releases of the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were in mid July and late June respectively, with the iPhone 4 following up on June 24 of 2010.

With the iPhone 4S, however, Apple switched to a to an October release window, moving away from the summer cycle they’ve been accustomed to and taking the Holiday spot previously reserved for the iPod. Given that Apple announced a record-breaking quarter with over 37 million iPhones sold after the iPhone 4S hit consumers late last year, it was likely a smart move and it makes sense for Apple to continue on this path going forward.

iMore previously reported on an October 2012 release date for the iPhone 5.

Even if you are a parent of a 2-year-old kid or a toddler prepare to share your iPhone/iPod/iPad with your child. You won’t manage to hide Apple gadgets from your child’s hands because playing with iPhone or iPad can be funnier for any kid than watching cartoons or playing videogames. Huawei's alleged 10-inch slate shows up at photoshoot ahead of MWC
Shortly after Huawei’s Ascend D1 made a trip to the studio for some glamour shots, an incognito slate is following suit. A set of photos from Russian site hi-tech@mail reveals what could be in store from the Chinese outfit at MWC 2012 (you know we’ll be there), though the lack of full-body pics makes us question whether it’s in fact the 10-inch tab it claims to be. Aside from the questionable size, we do see a tour around its purported metal casing, which is very reminiscent of that T-Mobile-bound MediaPad we showed you last year. Allegedly, the tablet will come sporting an 8-megapixel rear shooter, Ice Cream Sandwich and will be priced at about 20,000 Russian Rubles (or around $670). Those of you feeling intrigued can hit up the source link below to catch the rest of the sneaky shots.

Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Uncategorized | Wednesday February 22 2012 7:44 am | Comments (0)

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Single atom transistors point to the future of quantum computers, death of Moore’s law

Single Atom Transistor

Transistors — the basic building block of the complex electronic devices around you. Literally billions of them make up that Core i7 in your gaming rig and Moore’s law says that number will double every 18 months as they get smaller and smaller. Researchers at the University of New South Wales may have found the limit of this basic computational rule however, by creating the world’s first single atom transistor. A single phosphorus atom was placed into a silicon lattice and read with a pair of extremely tiny silicon leads that allowed them to observe both its transistor behavior and its quantum state. Presumably this spells the end of the road for Moore’s Law, as it would seem all but impossible to shrink transistors any farther. But, it could also points to a future featuring miniaturized solid-state quantum computers.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Sure I thought the movies were enjoyable but I only watched them once *gasp*. But even without loving the movies, you just pick up on things because EVERYBODY ELSE on this planet loves Star Wars. One thing I didn’t pick up on was that Yoda was not some sort of uberfrog. Why not? He’s green! And froggish! And that’s why this Star Wars Science Dagobah Frog Habitat for $14 would have been so funny. Because get it? A real frog in fake Yoda’s home planet! Whatever. Do You Know These Hidden Buttons in iPad’s Split Keyboard?

Do You Know These Hidden Buttons in iPad’s Split Keyboard?
Many iPad users complain that the split keyboard actually splits in the wrong place, making them uncomfortable when hitting certain letters. Many iPad users complain that the split keyboard actually splits in the wrong place, making them uncomfortable when hitting certain letters. E.g. users who want to tap the ‘T’ button with the right thumb need to reach over to the opposite side of the screen to do it. However, they don’t need to complain anymore.

Nevertheless, the split keyboard of iPad on iOS 5 has been a great hit among the iPad users. It has made it a lot easier to hold the iPad in two hands and type short messages whenever necessary.

To make this easier, the feature has also been merged with the split keyboard beautifully in a very unnoticeable manner and the duplicate keys are hidden along each end of the split thus making it possible to access keys without using the opposite hand.

ipad split keyboard

The credit goes to Finer Thing’s David Charter for this discovery, and it’s helpful for those who are not familiar or comfy with the home row style typing. Now it’s so easy to access even those keys that don’t belong to that hand almost subconsciously.

The iPad actually has six phantom buttons which allows users to press the opposite side of the screen to where the T,G,V and Y,G,B buttons are while still registering them by the keyboard. Users just have to tap next to the letter ‘Y’ and they’ll be given a letter ‘T’.

This is also Apple’s specialty that it helps its users in different ways like here it predicts what buttons user is going to hit and invisibly added those keys. So even if the user is not careful of hitting the buttons, he or she can still hit the right buttons without their knowledge making use of the UX design.

To activate the split keyboard, you may just drag it apart with your two fingers or tap and hold the button at the bottom and choose ‘split keyboard’ option.

Screens 2.0 review: The best designed, easiest to use VNC app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Uncategorized | Wednesday February 22 2012 12:44 am | Comments (0)

“With iCloud integration, SSH keys, and a re-designed Screens Connect, Screens 2.0 handles remote computing better and faster than ever before.”

Screens 2.0 from Edovia lets you use your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Mac to take control of anything from your home computer to a secure server room, from the couch while you watch the big game, to poolside, half a world away, while you sip an umbrella drink. Mobile VNC (Virtual Network Computing) and RDP (Remote Desktop) is the dream every geek has had since we first saw prop tablets on TV starships, since we first heard talk of ultra-thin clients. And Screens 2.0, thanks to its design and usability, opens that dream up to a wider, more mainstream audience than ever before.

Google Talk Guru answers questions via your IM app

google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Barnes & Noble 2012 Q3 Report: loss-making Nook generates sales, tears

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 9:44 pm | Comments (0)
It’s that time of the year when Barnes & Noble’s accountants reveal the figures for the quarter to determine if the age of print is over. Turns out there’s some good news for bookseller. Overall sales for the chain increased five percent: the company took $2.4 billion through the cash registers. That was split $1.49 billion (up two percent) in high-street retail, online sales took $420 million (up 32 percent year-on-year) and the Nook in all its forms and glories took $542 million (up 38 percent). The only grey cloud was that sales in college-only stores dropped three percent, thanks in part to renting textbooks to impecunious freshmen. They’re probably all using that money on buying digital content on their Nooks: digital content purchases increased by 85 percent in a single quarter. Like rival Amazon, it wouldn’t release how many devices were sold, except to say it likely maintained its market share.

However, all of that (pretty) good news is a bit of a smokescreen: B&N won’t reveal its profits after interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization has been deducted. Pre ITDA income dropped 12 percent from the same period in 2011 and the company has revealed that the BN.com and Nook businesses made a combined loss of $94 million, with annual income looking to be in negative figures.

Update: A tidbit from the conference call, the company believes the device currently holds around 30 percent of the overall e-reader market: using numbers direct from the publishers themselves.

Scrabble Helper helps you improve your Words With Friends gameplay

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 8:44 pm | Comments (0)
scrabblehelper

If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you’re at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you’d like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries – Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating — I think if the other side knows you’re doing it, it’s definitely not cheating. And it doesn’t take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper’s suggestions and deciding which words you’d like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Very handy, though perhaps not one for the Scrabble puritans in the crowd.

Should You Upgrade To Mountain Lion?

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 7:44 pm | Comments (0)

cougarftMountain Lion, Apple’s latest version of OS X, is currently in beta. However, it is in a stable enough form that some journalists were given sneak peeks over the past few days. I’ve been working with the OS for most of the last week and weekend and, as a public service announcement, I’d like to state that while Mountain Lion is a compelling upgrade to OS X it’s not currently ready for prime time. To be fair, the worst version of OS X I ever used was an early build of Lion. This build essentially rendered my machine useless and made me cry uncontrollably when my Time Machine backups failed. Never, as they say, again. However, being a glutton for punishment, I gave Mountain Lion a spin.

Late-night poll: Social apps — do you, or don’t you?

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 2:44 pm | Comments (0)

Google+

For some of us, social apps are a load of fun and we love having the big selection of them on our Androids. Every time we write a post about one, fans seem to come out of the woodwork. But there's also plenty who seem to not care for them, and even think they are a waste of time. We hear ya, and as a matter of fact, they are a waste of time — that's why they're so engaging! But seriously, everybody is different and no two Android fan's phones will be set up the same. We wouldn't want it any other way.

Myself, I love to play with them. I try them all, even the more obscure ones like Schemer. I usually give up on them after a week or so, but a select few keep me coming back. Holler at me on Google+ if you want.  What about you guys?  Do you find yourself checking in, or updating statuses or tweetering when you're bored? Let us know in the poll.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5%

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 12:44 pm | Comments (0)
Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5% originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 05:31:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Mountain Lion vs. Windows 8: Two Paths to Platform Convergence

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 11:44 am | Comments (0)

Now that Apple’s offered a sneak preview of OS X Mountain Lion, we can begin to compare it with Windows 8. Both OSes draw inspiration from, and aim to integrate with, mobile devices. Each OS faces the same basic challenge, but approaches the problem with different strategies.

Back to the iPad: What Apple should take from OS X Mountain Lion and give to iOS 6

Apple is clearly bringing the best parts of the iPad to the Mac, but how about bring iOS some of the best parts of OS X as well?

Yesterday Apple released the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion developers preview, and like OS X 10.7 Lion before it, front and center was a drive to take what worked best in iOS in general, and the iPad in specific back to the Mac. To make an Apple experience that’s more consistent across their two platforms. But how about a little quid pro quo? There are several aspects of OS X, including some of what’s being implemented in Mountain Lion, that I’d love to see in iOS 6.

Back to the iPad: What we'd like to see Apple bring from OS X Mountain Lion to iOS 6

Messages

Messages

While webOS-style Synergy should be the end game, one Messages app to manage them all would be a good start

Messages for OS X replaces the venerable iChat and brings iMessage to the Mac, including the ability to send text messages, as well as picture, video, and audio messages, and to share location and contact information. Just like in iOS, you get delivery and, if enabled, read receipts.

You can literally send an iMessage from your Mac at your desk, pick up your iPad and send a reply from the couch, then grab your iPhone and continue the conversation out the door. It does test the boundaries between connection and noise, staying in touch and being just to much, but it’s there on the Mac if you want to use it.

And unlike the iPad, it also handles AIM, Jabber, Google Talk, and Yahoo! Messenger protocols. Can we have this for iOS?

The ideal would be a webOS-style Synergy, where Apple would collect all your IM accounts in silos and present them in a unified view, so it doesn’t matter to the user what protocol anyone else is using, they just see it in iMessage. (Sort of like the unified inbox in Mail doesn’t care which account anyone is sending from, or which account you’re receiving from.)

One Messages app to rule them all, however, would be a good start. (Especially if they could figure out the iMessage overload issue.)

Notes

Adding photos to Notes would be nice. Adding typeface options would be nicer.

Notes has been around since iOS 1 (iPhone OS 1) and works in the best tradition of the venerable [http://www.treocentral.com](Palm OS) memos, automatically saving anything entered into it. Aside from some typeface choices added to settings, however, and rich-text options made system-wide, it hasn’t had much attention over the years.

The Mountain Lion version keeps the iPad aesthetic but adds some functionality, including rich text formatting options, the ability to add images, and to tear off pages to stick to the desktop. It’s not TextEdit-type functionality, much less Pages, but it’s… something.

It’s going beyond simple notes but not entering the realm of true text editor. It’s closer akin to the very basic image editing features added to Photos in iOS 5.

I don’t know if we’ll see anything so “widget”-like as page tearing in iOS any time soon, but the ability to do rich text, basic formatting, and paste images would be nice. What would be even nicer would be more typeface choices, like the Mac.

Marker Felt, Chalkboard, and Helvetica make for a rather anemic selection. iBooks offers more for reading than Notes does for writing. iOS in general, now that it has far more processing power and bigger storage options, could do with more typographic options to go with it.

Notification Center

Putting linen back in the background would please designers, stopping banners from covering buttons would please everyone

Both iOS 5 and OS X Lion make abundant use of the linen texture, but its inconsistency in iOS has caused some consternation in the design community. Given linen’s use in the fast app switcher and folders, it seems to signify a layer beneath the Home screen — something literally in the background. Yet Notification Center slides down on top of the Home screen.

Mac Notification Center uses linen, but is visibly beneath the scenes, just like folders and the iOS fast app switcher. It’s more consistent, which is far from a mainstream problem to to be sure, but it’s something Apple usually nails. So, yeah, want that.

The stacked banners shown off for Mountain Lion could work on iPad but not the limited screen real estate of the iPhone. Already on the iPhone the banners often obscure buttons at inopportune moments (until they automatically go away or you manually dismiss them.

Again, webOS does this better by making notifications much easier to dismiss with a quick swipe.

So take the background layering from the Mac, but take the functionality from webOS.

Gatekeeper

But would allowing the side-loading of non-App Store apps, signed by identified developers, really fix any iOS pain points?

This is the big one. The thing most power iPhone users have probably dreamed of since the original, no-third-party-apps iPhone launched in 2007 — the thing that led to the jailbreak scene. The ability to run apps not approved by Apple. The ability to run app that come from outside the App Store.

The Mac has always been able to do that. (The Mac App Store is a very recent development). With Mountain Lion, however, Apple has given users the choice — run only App Store apps, run App Store apps and non-App Store apps signed by identified developers, and run any app, no matter where it comes from.

The App Store provides a lot of security — it minimizes the chance for malware or other malicious software. For all the hoops developers have to jump through to get their apps approved, it creates a trusted environment that makes users not only confident and willing to buy apps, but eager to.

Non-App Store apps signed by identified developers is a good middle-ground. They don’t need Apple approval but if any of them are found to be malicious, their certificate can be revoked.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this would mean much for iOS. It still wouldn’t allow the tweaks that jailbreak users enjoy, the ones that hack into notification center or the dock or folders or the messages system, or otherwise modify the system itself. It could potentially allow porn, copy-cat or other intellectual-property violating apps, GPL-licensed apps, and the few remaining things Apple still blocks or removes from the store, but what else? Tethering apps? Apple may yank certificates for those anyway. And unlike the Mac, the potential market doesn’t seem worth the effort on iOS.

A few more things

There’s more from OS X and the Mac, past and present, that I’d like to see on the iPad and iOS. In no particular order:

  • FaceTime conference calls. Like the iChat that Mountain Lion kills off, the big iPad screen — especially a Retina display on a quad-core iPad 3! — should allow for multi-person calling.
  • iPhoto. The built-in photos app has basic editing now, but it doesn’t have the range of tools iPhoto offers. Aperture could be an App Store app, but unifying Photos and iPhoto, like iChat and Messages, should be on the agenda.
  • Print to PDF. A built-in PDF printer option, built into AirPrint, that goes right to Documents in the Cloud, would be great for everything from Mail to Safari.
  • Per-account mail signatures. No reason the current signature setting can’t be moved down a step in the Settings hierarchy. Work and play can’t always have the same signature.
  • Top Sites for Safari. I could do without the forced curve effect, but quickly getting my most common sites as thumbnails is very convenient.
  • Launch center. Or Expose. Apple originally tested a more Expose-like fast app switching system before settling on the current, dock-behind-a-the-dock approach. Visually, it still seems like a better metaphor, especially for a larger display like the iPad. Apple used it in Safari (well before webOS cards), and they could still take it system-wide.

I’m sure others would add multi-use login, or even guest login, to the list, but it’s fairly clear Apple means for iOS devices to be personal devices at this point.

iOS 6

While iOS is based on the same core as OS X, and they share many of the same concepts and ideas, if different implementations at times, there’s a lot about the Mac that should now go back to the iPad. Hopefully Apple has that planned for iOS 6.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue on Android

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue for Android

Ah, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has arrived. It's the time of year when men head to the mailbox and back a little quicker, and young teens sneak peeks before sneaking entire magazines. (You know you've done it.) Only, it's 2012. And as we saw from Sports Illustrated as early as Google IO in May 2010 as part of Google's HTML5 and WebM push, the publisher's expanding far beyond the print product. We got our first taste of that on the mobile side at Google's Honeycomb event in early 2011.

Today, you've got several options for Sports Illustrated, and a little something extra for the Swimsuit issue. For those who subscribe to the print product, you can use the Android smartphone and tablet apps just like you normally would. Fire it up, log in, and download the week's take. SI's also offering the Swimsuit issue a la carte, for $6.99.

But what we were interested in is the new (and free) SI Swimsuit Viewer app, which works in conjunction with the print product. A smattering of pages have a little video icon on them. Fire up the app (it doesn't work on Ice Cream Sandwich, by the way), and let it focus in on the page. (It might take a try or two, and as you can see it might make you feel a little funny, like when you climb the rope in gym glass.) Once it locks on, you get bonus video of whatever model you just ogled. It's gimmicky, to be sure, and it's overly sponsored by Direct TV. Though we're surprisingly willing to put up with that sort of in-your-face advertising, considering the bodies that those faces are attached to.

On one had, yeah. We're talking about bikini models here. We're not exactly propelling the species foward or anything. But on the other hand, it's nice to see a traditional print product embrace the digital and mobile space. Sports Illustrated has certainly done that, and done it well.

We've got some hands- and eyes-on video after the break.

Premium cable TV comes to XBMC, GoodPlayer and more via InfiniTV 4 tuner

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 9:44 am | Comments (0)

In the olden days of CableCARD circa 2004, only a select few devices and software could leverage the card’s power to watch premium cable TV, but not today. Today just about any adventurous dev can take advantage of the fact that an OCUR is a network tuner and access premium cable TV — as long as the content is marked Copy Freely, that is. The latest to unleash that power is XBMC which also helps extend the functionality to iOS via GoodPlayer and Buzz Player as well as any UPnP client with the help of a Serviio media server. Essentially this custom code is acting as a middleman, but fulfilling the dream that any software could directly control and stream from a CableCARD tuner like the InfiniTV 4 is within reach. The only drawback left is that even with the current sale price of the InfiniTV 4 at $199, it still isn’t as low as the cost of entry of something like a ClearQAM tuner.

True to their word, the Motorola Motoluxe has arrived on schedule and is available to purchase today in the UK. Retailer Clove Technology has received their first stocks of the device a day earlier than expected, and are offering up a new Motoluxe for £234 ($371).

The mid-range Motoluxe brings along Android 2.3.7 for the ride, with a 4-inch screen, a modest 800MHz processor, and the new version of Philblur Motoblur known as the Motorola MotoSwitch UI (in Europe at least.) It's a solid enough device, as we found out back at CES in January — it won't blow you away, but could be a winner in some European and emerging markets.

Why Do Apps Such As Path Steal Your Contact and How Do You Prevent It?

Over the years, iPhone apps have been accused of spying on users and secretly tracking their location. And now iPhone apps are back in the news again for all the wrong reasons after it was discovered that the popular social app Path copies the entire contents of your users Address Book and stores it in the company’s database. So, why do app developers want access to your contacts? How do you ensure your contact information isn’t accessible to such unsolicited apps?

First things first, it’s well known that several apps transmit user data without your knowledge or consent. Though Path has hogged the limelight, it’s believed that several other popular apps invade your privacy as well. These include

  • Foursquare (uses your email and phone number without any explicit warning)
  • Instagram (Email, Phone Numbers, First, Last , after warning)
  • Facebook (Email, Phone Numbers, First, Last, after warning)
  • Twitter for iOS (Email, Phone Numbers, after warning)
  • Voxer (Email, First, Last, Phone numbers, after warning)

Now, the tricky question of why do these apps try to access your contacts and how do they do it? Of course, the easiest excuse is that apps which offer “Friends” functionality would need to access your Address Book.  It’s difficult to believe that most app developers would do this out of ignorance, especially when evidence suggests they’ve anonymized the data by ‘hashing’ the data and saving a checksum. In any case, this isn’t the way it should work and as Steve Jobs famously said the best way to deal with user’s privacy is to ask them every time before you access their sensitive data.

Obviously, the ideal solution would be for Apple to force developers into disclosing how they handle user data and never to do it without first alerting the user. Till that comes into effect, users must educate themselves on how to stop apps such as Path from stealing your contact information. We’ve already covered one prospective solution – ContactPrivacy, an app for jailbroken devices that explicitly warns you when any other application tries to access your Address Book.

Microsoft details SkyDrive overhaul, Windows 8 app and desktop sync in tow (Update: video)

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 5:44 am | Comments (0)
We heard whispers of SkyDrive desktop applications a few days ago. Today, Microsoft confirmed just that alongside a Metro-style offering for Windows 8 and other improvements to its cloud storage tech. In a post on the Building Windows 8 blog, the outfit discusses file sync via desktop app for easy drag-and-drop use — much like we’ve become used to with Dropbox. The overhaul will support 2GB max file uploads through Windows Explorer and the desktop software will play nice with both Vista and Windows 7. Upgrades will also bring snappy, “touch-first” perusal of your files in a dedicated Windows 8 app and will offer accessibility in other Metro-syle applications should the need arise. The post states that “For app developers, this means that, so long as your app supports opening and saving documents and photos, it will automatically support SkyDrive without any additional work.” Similar to its cloud storage competitor, SkyDrive will also enable remote access via its web site in case you need to “fetch” that presentation on a co-worker’s PC. Still no word on extended storage options / pricing that we’ve heard rumblings about, though. For a closer look at the some of the tweaks, peep the gallery below or hit the source link for more on the particulars.

Update: A video demo now awaits on the other side of the break.

iPad 2John Paczkowski from All Things D has claimed this morning that Apple’s next iPad (likely to be iPad 3) will be announced in the first week of March at a media event in San Francisco. If this rumor comes true, it would be 12 months-interval between the iPad 2 and iPad 3. Details below!

Sources say the company has chosen the first week in March to debut the successor to the iPad 2 and will do so at one of its trademark special events. The event will be held in San Francisco, presumably at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location for big announcements like these. No word yet on a street date for the iPad 3 (assuming that’s what it’s called), though my guess is retail availability will follow roughly the same schedule as that of the iPad 2: available for purchase a week or so after the event.

The source also reiterates previous rumors of the new iPad sharing the same features of iPad 2 apart from a “Retina” display with 2048 x 1536 pixels.

Bloomberg reported back in January that the iPad 3 would feature a Retina display, A6 quad-core processor and Global LTE Options. Parts floating around China suggests that the rumor surrounding a slightly thicker size to accomodate a bigger battery size and display are likely to be true. The parts in China suggest the increase in thickness would be around 1mm.

Let’s see whether this rumor is true or not. March is just a few weeks away. Are you guys excited? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4

Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:

  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as “onion skin view” let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel’s new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We’ve been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don’t even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you’re done editing.

I’ve had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I’ve been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We’ll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!

Tarzan Ball is a tricky hook-and-pull physics game

Uncategorized | Tuesday February 21 2012 12:45 am | Comments (0)
tarzanball

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Apple Cross-Breeds Desktop With Mobile in OS X Mountain Lion

Parts of the OS X refresh, called “Mountain Lion” and expected to be released in late summer, will be deja vu for users of Apple’s mobile products. A new messaging app will replace iChat.

Sand Trap is a fun and difficult physics maze game

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 10:45 pm | Comments (0)
Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 9:44 pm | Comments (0)

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

google voice search

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google’s official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search’s polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Samsung Galaxy Note available today on AT&T for $299

Samsung Galaxy Note available today on AT&T for $299

Samsung Galaxy Note

The the Samsung Galaxy Note is finally available in the United States, hitting Best Buy and AT&T's websites right this second, and brick-and-mortar stores just as soon as the sun rises. (And, you know, the stores actually open.)

The Galaxy Note is no stranger to these parts. We reviewed the European version some months ago — it's already shipped more than 1 million units worldwide — and we've had the AT&T version for a few days now. They're larger the same (large) smartphone. It's got a hulking (but beautiful) 5.3-inch Super AMOLED display — with a whopping 800×1280 resolution — powered by a 1.4 GHz dual-core processor running Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. It's got an 8-megapixel camera in the back, and a 2MP shooter ujp front.

The AT&T version varies slightly by switching to the traditional 4-butoon scheme below the display, whereas the Euro version opts for a larger, centered home button. That's not unusual — the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II lines did the same. AT&T's Galaxy Note also throws in a 4G LTE radio in addition to the HSPA+ radio. (Take that, Europe!)

It's a smartphone, to be sure. Makes phone calls and everything. But the noted feature of the note — and really the reason it's so big — is the included stylus, called the S Pen. It brings a whole 'nother level of functionality to the traditional Android experience. And when not needed (or wanted), it tucks away neatly into the phone itself, out of sight, out of mind.

There's your teaser. We've got lots more coming in our full AT&T Galaxy Note review. If you're the early adopting type, head into a store today, or hit the links below.

Apple asks EU regulators to step in on Motorola patent dispute

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 9:44 am | Comments (0)

Apple already asked the European Telecommunications Standards Institute for more transparency on FRAND licensing, and now it’s seeking a full-blown intervention. Motorola Mobility claims it received a letter on Friday from the European Commission advising there has been a complaint against it from Apple. The letter also stated that Cupertino wants the Commission to enforce the firm’s standards-essential patents that breach agreed FRAND commitments. This latest development comes just one day after a German court awarded Apple an injunction against Motorola’s implementation of slide-to-unlock on smartphones, as well as an ongoing saga of similar disputes with the firm. It’s also just days after the European Commission approved Google’s acquisition of the handset maker, based on beliefs that it “does not itself raise competition issues.”

ITC closes the book on HTC’s first complaint against Apple, still working on its sequels

HTC vs. Apple

Remember that first shot across Apple’s bow that HTC fired way back May of 2010? No? We don’t blame you. Since that initial exchange of complaints against each other the patent war has spun almost completely out of control. Well, in October an ITC judge handed down an initial ruling, rejecting the Taiwanese manufacturer’s claim that Cupertino and crew had infringed upon its patents. Now, almost four months later, a final judgment has been issued, consistent with the initial decision — Apple is not in violation of the patents in question (which primarily concern the dialer and power management features) and the investigation has officially been closed. Don’t get your hopes up too much though, this is just the first complaint in a long series of suits the two have filed against each other and HTC can always appeal in a federal circuit court. In other words, there’s plenty more where this came from.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 7:44 am | Comments (0)
windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 5:44 am | Comments (0)
personalactivitymonitor

Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s free and bare-bones — all it does is track what applications you’re using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn’t integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn’t require constant Web app use, knowing how long you’ve used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space — alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive — but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.

Google counting down, building up to Mobile World Congress

Google at Mobile World Congress

You didn't really think Google would have just any old countdown page for Mobile World Congress, did you? And instead of saying Google's counting down to MWC, it looks more like el Goog is building up to MWC. What you see above is where we stand as of Feb. 17, and just below is a little slider that goes from a blank canvas to what should be a fully formed Android extravaganza.

Google's not going to half-ass its MWC presence, that's for sure. Last year there were smoothies of every major version flavor (well, most of them anyway), a two-story slide, and more developers than we could shake a stick at. It was magical.

A report from The Next Web informs that Apple is in ‘crunch mode’ and is pushing developers to finish the apps for the iPad 3 so that they can demonstrate both on stage and show off in advertisements for Apple’s next generation iPad.

Apple has a trend of doing so. Infinity Blade 2 is an example which flaunted the Retina display quality and the quick processor of the iPhone 4S. The report further informs that developers who are known to make high quality apps are being targeted to showcase the sharper screen of the iPad 3.

iPad 2

The New York Times have also shared some details from its sources which informs the Retina display looks “truly amazing” . Apple’s employee has stated the new tablet is being tested and has the same shape as iPad 2 but has a faster processor and a ‘truly amazing’ screen.

Designer Chris Koerner has put together an infographic demonstrating why the Retina display of the new iPad is such a huge deal for the Apple community.

The inforgraphic shows the comparison between the screen resolutions of iPhone 4/4S, 3GS/3, iPad 2!, Blue ray and the awaited iPad 3.

The fruit company has managed to squeeze the pixel size of its largest iMac which has a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a 27″ screen into a 1/3 inch screen. Amazing!

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

Uncategorized | Monday February 20 2012 1:44 am | Comments (0)

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that’s exactly what’s going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It’s a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won’t be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you’d like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register — or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

Uncategorized | Sunday February 19 2012 11:44 pm | Comments (0)
interlocked

Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It’s a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you’re presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into “move” mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It’s a tricky, difficult game, but it’s a great brain teaser — and definitely a keeper.

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera
We love to take pictures of the people we love. It’s one of the primary reasons we buy cameras, and it’s one of the primary reasons we use our iPhone camera. Our friends, our families, our children, whether it’s for something special like a card or graduation, an event like a trip, a party or, or family get-together, or just a chance encounter, we always have our iPhone with us so we can always grab that perfect portrait of that important person.

But how do you take a great looking portrait with your iPhone? Lighting, camera level, pose, and the “rule of thirds” we went over last time all play a role.

Lighting

If you’re using an iPhone to take portraits, you likely do not have (nor want) access to a professional lighting studio, but you can still control some aspects that will have a major impact on your photos.

Avoid the sun

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

Moving your subject into the shade will provide much softer and more appealing light.

I’ve heard a countless number of people exclaim about a beautiful sunny day being such a great day to go out and take photos. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Direct sunlight is a photographer’s worst nightmare — it provides harsh, unforgiving lighting and makes your subject squint. In fact, the best type of day for taking portraits is an overcast one. This isn’t something you can control, though, so if you find yourself taking portraits on a sunny day, head to a shaded area.

Natural light is the best kind of light

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

Natural light is much prettier than indoor, incandescent light.

Most indoor lighting is horrible for photography because cameras struggle with accurately interpreting the colors — or in photography terms, choosing the correct white balance. A big reason for this is because when indoors, you usually have more than one light source (including natural light) and each source may be emitting a different color of light. If you’ve noticed that your indoor images have a yellow tint to them, this is why.

So what is this magical “natural light”? It’s simply light that’s produced by sun, but not direct sunlight. To improve your indoor portraits, turn off your indoor lights and head to a window or sliding glass door to use as your light source. Experiment with placement, as well. Placing your subject at a 45 degree angle to the source is a good place to start.

Catchlight

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

You subject's eyes will stand out with catchlights.

Ever notice that in some portraits, the subject’s eyes stand out more than in other portraits? Sometimes there is some post-processing involved, but most of the time it was just clever placement of lighting — and it’s so simple. To make your subject’s eyes stand out, you need catchlights.

A catchlight is simply a reflection of the light source in your subject’s eye. Given this definition, it should be easy to understand that you want the light source to be somewhere in front of your subject, preferably above eye level, to get the desired results. This is happens naturally when seeking out a light source, like a window, but takes a little thinking on your part when outdoors.

The best way to get catchlights with outdoor portraits is to make sure they are posed in a way that allows the light to hit their eyes. Since the light is coming from the sky, make sure your subject is not looking down or wearing a hat that shades the eyes. If you’re photographing a girl with thick bangs, you may consider taking her photo from above and have her look up at you. If it’s an overcast day, make note of the sun’s location and position yourself so it’s behind you and in front of the person you are taking photos of. This is good for both catchlights and lighting in general.

Get eye level with your subject

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

Getting down (or up) to your subject's level will provide better results.

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple repositioning of the photographer to transform an image from being a simple snapshot, to being a nice portrait. The trick is to get to your subject’s level. For babies, this means getting down on the floor, possibly laying on your tummy. For small children, crouch down or get on your knees. And the one I have to constantly remind myself about — get to higher ground for people who are taller than you. This is actually pretty easy with an iPhone since the viewfinder is your screen. All you need to do is hold the iPhone above your head, at your subject’s eye level, when taking the photo. The screen is big enough for it to still be easy to frame the shot and trigger the shutter.

Remember, though, that rules are meant be broken. If done right, portraits shot from above or below the subject can come out rather stunning.

Posing

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

Pose your subjects in a natural, comfortable way.

Posing your subject is definitely one of the hardest things about portrait photography and we could focus an entire article on just this topic alone. For today, we’ll just hit a couple main points.

Keep your subject’s attire in mind when choosing a background. For example, if your subject is wearing a Hawaiian shirt, you’ll probably want to avoid posing your subject in front of a bunch of palm trees. You want the background to compliment your subject, not distract away from them.

Try not to put your subject into specific poses as this often makes them feel awkward which translates into an awkward photo. Stick with poses that are natural and not forced. Aim to give instructions that naturally result in a nice pose. For example, tell your subject to lean against a wall and play with his phone while you respond to an important email. This will result in a completely natural pose because your subject doesn’t even realize they are being posed.

For smiles, the last thing you want to do is say “smile!”. For most people, this results in a very awkward, forced smile. Again, the goal is for your subject to look natural and comfortable, so try to evoke a natural smile by making them laugh or think of something that makes them happy.

Rule of thirds and empty space

How to take great looking portraits with your iPhone camera

When using the rule of thirds, it's better to have the empty space in front of, not behind, your subject.

Don’t forget about the rule of thirds! This can be applied to every area of photography, including portraits. But with portraits, we’re going to expand on the idea just a little bit more.

If your subject isn’t directly facing you, frame your shots so that the front of their body is facing the empty space — or, the two-thirds of the photo that does not have your subject. Our eyes naturally look in the direction that the subject is facing and it feels awkward to the viewer if the empty space is behind the subject.

Now go out and shoot!

Your assignment for this week is to go out and take some killer portraits. Practice makes perfect, so solicit your friends, significant others, and if you’re feeling brave, strangers, to hone your skill. Then head over to the Photography Forums, ask questions, share your results, and offer feedback to your fellow iPhoneographers!

Alleged iPad 3 Retina Display examined under a microscope

iPad 3 screen

There are no shortage of iPad 3 rumors out there. Quad-core A6, LTE radio, Retina Display — we’ve heard it all, but haven’t actually seen much in the way of evidence. Now MacRumors claims to have gotten its paws on part of the mythical beast. The site has a 9.7-inch LCD, in the same aspect ratio as the iPad and iPad 2 that certainly appears to be rocking a full 2048 x 1536 resolution. Without a way to power the screen its a little tough to be certain, but the same area of the alleged iPad 3 panel does seem to house twice as many pixels as its predecessor when viewed under the same magnification. Could this in fact be the Retina Display destined to put iOS 5.1 in the hands of millions of tablet fans? We’ll just have to wait for Tim Cook to reveal of its secrets to us, which should be happening sooner, rather than later.

The 3D Is Probably Not the Reason People Are Staring At Your Dress [Clothing]

Oh sure, people might claim they’re staring at the 3D skeletal print you’re wearing, but I’m fairly certain most of the eyes you’ll attract while in this skintight dress won’t be from people wearing blue and red glasses. More »

Save your tabs and Panorama tab groups in Firefox 4

Uncategorized | Sunday February 19 2012 8:44 pm | Comments (0)
Firefox 4 save tabs

When Firefox 4′s tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4′s final release — but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you’ve used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla’s new browser doesn’t always save your tab groupings when you close the browser — a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the ‘Save and Quit’ dialog box — and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type ‘quit’ into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That’s it — now you’ll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura

While we’ve still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they’ve discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It’s a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there’s a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme’s wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

MIT duo successfully tests wireless drug-delivery microchips, more consistent than injections

Uncategorized | Sunday February 19 2012 4:44 pm | Comments (0)
Despise those daily injections of essential medication? Well folks, relief could be on the way. Over a decade ago, two MIT professors, Robert Langer and Michael Cima, first considered developing a drug-delivery microchip that could be wirelessly controlled. This past week, researchers in Cambridge — alongside scientists from MicroCHIPS, Inc. — announced that they have successfully used the aforementioned chip to give osteoporosis patients their daily allotment of teriparatide. “You can do remote control delivery, you can do pulsatile drug delivery, and you can deliver multiple drugs,” Langer noted. Chips used in this particular study housed 20 doses each and results indicated that the delivery showed less variation than administered injections. In theory, microchips like these could be used alongside sensors that monitor glucose levels — creating tech that could adapt to changes in a patient’s condition. More info on the trial awaits in the source link below.

[Thanks, Lydia]

Do You Know These Hidden Buttons in iPad’s Split Keyboard?

Do You Know These Hidden Buttons in iPad’s Split Keyboard?

Many iPad users complain that the split keyboard actually splits in the wrong place, making them uncomfortable when hitting certain letters. E.g. users who want to tap the ‘T’ button with the right thumb need to reach over to the opposite side of the screen to do it.

Apple has been caught up in the same privacy storm that has overtaken Path, Twitter, Yelp and Foursquare in the past several days, as news surfaced that developers for iOS have been able to access users’ address book information without their permission or knowledge. Apple imposes rigid requirements on developers and has touted its “walled garden” approach to the mobile Web as safe and secure.
